Experience

I am currently a doctoral student in American history at George Mason University. As a graduate teaching assistant, I have 4 1/2 years experience both working with students in the classroom and tutoring them one on one. My goal is to help students not only learn about history, but to learn critical thinking and writing skills that can improve their academic performance across disciplines. Not only is history life's greatest true story, it is also all around us, informing how we understand and think about the world. I want to help my students make the connection between the history they are learning and what is going on around them today. It's my belief that making these connections will not only improve academic performance but will also equip students with the skills they will need going forward into higher education and the job market. During my long career as a lover of history and now, as a historian, I have studied many parts of American (and Asian!) history. My specialty is 20th century American cultural history, which means I am able to study popular culture along with more traditional primary sources. I am your one stop shop for what happens after history class "ends." As a doctoral student, it is also my job to know and teach all of American history, so I can work across the centuries and provide insight and guidance on any topic in the American history field. I have taught both slavery and the Cold War at a university level, but my expertise covers many other topics in the history of the United States. I decided to pursue a PhD in history because I love teaching. My goal is to excite students not only about history (which is pretty exciting!) but also to get them excited about the learning process itself. We will work together not only to learn the facts of history, but to improve your self confidence as a student, which will only increase your academic performance, with the added bonus of making learning more fun for you. We'll approach this challenge and surmount it together!
